Arthritis is a disease that affects the joints, causing pain and inflammation. There are several types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis (the most common) and rheumatoid arthritis (the most disabling).
Arthritis is more common among older people and is a major cause of disability in the elderly. Arthritis drugs are meant to help provide for the symptoms and discomfort associated with arthritis.
- Pain relievers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are sometimes used as the first course of treatment.
- A newer line of NSAIDs called COX-2 inhibitors includes popular prescription drugs Vioxx** and Celebrex. Unfortunately, the safety of these drugs is currently being questioned.

- Disease Modifying Anti-rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs), like Arava, are used to slow or stop joint damage.
- Biological response modifiers, such as Remicade, work by blocking tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a protein that causes inflammation as part of the body's natural immune system response.
- Corticosteriods reduce swelling, inflammation, and the production of TNF.
